I'm hoping you get a sense that for a democracy to work, to be an effective part of our daily experience it needs to be fueled by accurate information about our world; specifically the actions of the players on the world stage.
In our TV mediated society we are told more about how someone looks, how his or her delivery was, than the quality of the substance of their speech. Notice that 'pundits' give no sense of history or context either; these expert commentators, they just deal with appearances, ideas dealt with in a self-referential vacuum. You may have noticed that Helen Thomas, the first person to ask a question at White House press conferences and the person to wrap he conferences up with "Thank You Mr President "; a tradition that has continued through the last 9 presidents wasn't heard from this last (scripted)conference. You may remember she has said "He is the worst president in all of American history." The situation might lead one to believe that to stay on the good side of the president is necessary to have access to him. How effective can reporters be if they need to pussyfoot around the people they are reporting on? Could you call a public figure on something that they said if you knew exposing their lie would ruin your career?
Also quoted from the linked article:
Also snubbed by Mr. Bush at last night's news conference was Mike Allen of The Washington Post, the second consecutive time that the president has skipped over The Post's correspondent, who was seated last night in the front row.
Will Mike Allen think twice before asking a substantive question? To save his job will he 'play nice' with this administration? Is that enriching, enlivening Democracy? I find a scripted press conference pretty darn shameful as it is. I grew up fed this ideal of 'Freedom of the Press' that was what made our nation great. Those 'misled folks' over in Russia had a pre-digested press.
Assistant Director of Security Fred talman gave the orders but Robert Williams, the 9 year security guard at Crossgates Mall in Guilderland New York has been fired. He was the fellow who confronted "Give Peace a Chance" t-shirt wearer Steve Downs as he lunched at the mall and asked the man to take off his anti-war shirt or leave the premises.
"Williams said it was Tallman who made the decision on Monday to have Downs arrested if he and his son, Roger Downs, 31, refused to take off T-shirts that bore peace slogans."
After the Downs paperwork was written up:
"Tallman was contacted by the officer, Williams said, and told the officer to have Williams sign the complaint because "he represents the company so he can sign.""
Go figure... I wonder about Mr Williams. Was he gung-ho about censoring the mall customers? Did he feel ridiculous bothering folks having lunch due to 'orders from the top' ...?
Isn't it a bit alarming that individuals can end up dealing with the Police because of what a t-shirt says; non -profane, nothing graphic, (although the world needs some good graphic peace shirts by my estimation) merely the words "Give Peace A Chance".
As a blogger that wants to work to let America be the America our forefathers envisioned I am proud to say " Give Peace A Chance" . I am proud to question an administration that is so comfortable in misleading the public, "We the People". A scripted press conference dealing with life and death issues is not right. People being bothered for differing from, and argueably, holding more moral views than our present administration is not right.

History gives us a bit of perspective, context that gives us a cognitive framework to reason with and understand current events... (Give link a moment to load, it stops for a moment then starts up again). I realise the presentation is controversial. What do you see as Americas future, the legacy we will leave our children?
Asking questions and wanting factual answers is both Patriotic as well as American.
Many American corporations funded and worked with the Nazi war industry during World War Two.
Today in history: In 1936, Adolf Hitler ordered his Nazi troops into the Rhineland, violating the Treaty of Versailles.

"There can be no peace without law. And there can be no law if we were to invoke one code of conduct for those who oppose us and another for our friends" -President Dwight Eisenhower
Before we get into news having to do with the US agenda of attacking Iraq let us think about the nation building we have done in Afganistan, now that we have freed the Afghani people from the Taliban.
Remember: "We want to be a continuing part of the new era of hope in Afghanistan," said Bush on Oct. 11, at an event highlighting U.S. humanitarian assistance in that country. He added, "We are helping the people to now recover from years of tyranny and oppression. We're helping Afghanistan to claim its democratic future, and we're helping that nation to establish public order and safety." Read the reality .
Things at the UN? Well there seems to be a bit of US foot stomping going on...
The Pope is not behind the Bush rush to attack Iraq (from the linked article):
" The Pope also questioned the President's statements invoking God's name as justification for the invasion.
"God is a neutral observer in the affairs of man," the Pope said. "Man cannot march into war and assume God will be at his side."
In Rome, the pope called for "common efforts to spare humanity another dramatic conflict." "
I have acted on Helen Caldicot's idea (contact info) and written the Pope asking him to fly to Baghdad to stave off the "Shock and Awe" attack that latest sources say will involve 3000 missiles.
About last nights press conference, to quote Mattew Rothschld: ..."More Fearmongering and Warmongering"
Hearing Mr Bush calling on God has me worried. Not merely because of the basic notion of seperation of church and state that our country is founded on but on using religion and its power of moral suasion to blind our credulous populace to its own actions while sanctioning the what he does regardless of his intentions. Look at India. Fear and nationalism are time honored tools used to manipulate people and consolidate power, especially when important issues at home are not being addressed. Check out Wampum Blog for some interesting insight on our employment situation (as well as links), which looks a bit more grave when one figures in 'the marginally attached, not counted"(1.6 million) as well as the 'discouraged unemployed' (450,000)
You read this article about Easter Baskets: "At the Astor Place Kmart, the encampment is on display just inside the main entrance. A camouflaged sandy-haired soldier with an American-flag arm patch stands alert in a teal, pink, and yellow basket beneath a pretty green-and-purple bow. Within a doll-arm's reach are a machine gun, rifle, hand grenade, large knife, pistol, and round of ammunition. In the next basket a buzz-cut blond with a snazzy dress uniform hawks over homeland security, an American eagle shield on his arm, and a machine gun, pistol, Bowie knife, two grenades, truncheon, and handcuffs at the ready. "
Easter We are in the midst of a Collective Psychosis. People who preach hate are accepted as mainstream on MSNBC and Fox, the jingoistic Rush Limbaugh maligns the airwaves with his narrow meanspirited spiels. But children, on Easter... Childrens Easter Baskets that have toys glorifying war in them. Who are buying these for the kiddies?
You know the Army has a video game...

Yesterdays post about DynCorp seems only more pertinent today in the light of a link at Byte Back about Afganistan's heroin production going up up up:
"Afghanistan retook its place as the world's leading producer of heroin last year, after US-led forces overthrew the Taliban which had banned cultivation of opium poppies."
Now of course you read about DynCorps ubiquity in providing services to our military. I happened to remember something about heroin DynCorp and motor oil. Your reading yesterday told you they (DynCorp) man poppy and coca eradication flights, earning them a Soldier Of Fortune magazine coverstory entitled "COLOMBIA'S COKE-BUSTIN' BRONCOS." DynCorp has been charged with terrorism for negatively affecting the lives of 10,000 Ecuadorans that live on the border of Columbia- and are being sprayed:
"The report indicated that herbicide spraying in Colombia, near the Ecuador border, with the herbicide called Round Up Ultra, caused "harm to the health and the crops of 100 percent of the population within five kilometers of the border with Colombia."
" According to the Court's order, the "use by DynCorp of the toxic herbicide in a prolongued and repetitive form has caused continuous and severe harm to the plaintiffs, which constitutes Crimes Against Humanity."
I have read The Narco News Bulletin since hearing Al Giordano interviewed on Democracy Now; he spoke eloquently about the necessity of freedom of the press as well as about reporting on drug crimes high in Mexican government (the ex Presdidents brother Raul Salinas) occasioning money laundering by Citibank. He was sued and has won the case. .
From building Baghdad decimating missile systems to rebuilding Baghdad: The new czar of the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance sure is a man of many hats. Three star general and friend of Donald Rumsfeld Jay Garner left his post as assistant vice chief of staff of the Army into the presidents chair at a missile defense company. Looks like now he'll be overseeing humanitarian aid... From the article:
"David Kirp, a professor at UC Berkeley's Goldman School of Public Policy who focuses on ethics, said the Bush administration is sending a profound message to Iraqis by placing a man with Garner's background in charge of reconstruction and humanitarian aid.
"This is a lovely example of our indifference to the people of Iraq," he said. "It truly bespeaks a lack of serious thinking on the administration's part."
Much like the pre-emptive bombing/attack to save the Iraqi people idea...
In the interest of adding to the discourse while turning you on to yet another interesting website I offer this piece that discusses "Bill O'Reilly's enemy of the state"

Imagine, you are accosted by security at the mall for wearing a " Give Peace a Chance" t-shirt that you had just bought there ; then arrested for not taking it off or leaving.
"I was in the food court with my son when I was confronted by two security guards and ordered to either take off the T-shirt or leave the mall," said Downs. Read the article. Hard to believe, at least in the America I grew up in... I'm glad the victim of this, Mr Stephen Downs, is a lawyer...
My buddy Greg who has lived in the area said that the local NPR station, WAMC has been having a field day with this."That a woman's peace group of 100+ went into the mall at noon today wearing peace shirts - no security or police in sight, newspeople all over the place, not many shoppers there, people calling in from "other" malls, it's a riot, joke of the day!!! :)))"

Do yourself a favor. Head on over to Dave Neiwart's site Orcinus and read Rush, Newspeak and Fascism parts 1-7. Neiwarts writing is good, you might want to look into his archives to read his pieces on Fundamentalism. It will take you a bit to read 1-7 but remember: Your brain deserves the treat. In these complex times we need more perspective to analyze well, "outside of the box" as the saying goes.
Read the link to "Some History of the Conservative movement and "How to Fight Back" at See The Forest blog. Yup, a lot of reading already; and I haven't even offered any of the days news links... Good brain food though.

If you listened to the Greg Palast in the link I offered yesterday you've heard the name DynCorp in relation to the office of Total Information Awareness- now see how this company is tied into the Pentagon as well. By one estimate, the Pentagon this year will spend at least $30 billion--or 8% of its overall budget, on private military companies (PMCs), even if the U.S. doesn't invade Iraq . Here is an article from Dan Baum that tells more about DynCorp. DynCorp is involved with everything from coca eradication flights to installing new PCs for the FBI, servicing military helicopters, making smallpox and anthrax vaccines. You may have heard the company's name mentioned in a case of its' worker's involved in the sex trade in Bosnia. Now I hope you clicked on the Baum article before looking into this story of slavery, underage girls and the UN.

I wrote to the Pope asking him to go to Iraq to save the many civilians there that will become 'collateral damage' in this "Awe and Shock" attack that Mr Bush and the Pentagon are planning. From: <helen>mailto:hcaldic@bigpond.com>helen caldicott Sent: Saturday, March 01, 2003 11:01 AM Subject: An Appeal from Dr. Helen Caldicott to the Pope
Dear Friends,
I write this appeal for your help as a pediatrician, a mother, and a grandmother -- and I am writing about the lives of tens of thousands of children.
Although the current administration has demonstrated it has no reservations about slaughtering up to 500,000 innocents in Iraq, there is one person whose life they absolutely will not risk. That person is Pope John Paul II. While the Pope has already formally denounced the proposed war, calling it a defeat for humanity, as well as sent his top spokesperson to meet with Saddam Hussein, he now must take a historically unprecedented action of his own and travel to Baghdad. The Pope's physical presence in Iraq will act as the ultimate human shield, during which time leaders of the words nations can commit themselves to identifying and implementing a peaceful solution to this war that the world's majority clearly does not support.
To persuade the Holy Father to take this unusual but potent action, he must hear from you and millions of others around the world who have already been inspired to stand up and speak out for peace. A mountain of surface mail, email, faxes, and phone calls are our devices to inspire him. Please understand that you taking just a few minutes right now to communicate with him may ultimately spare the lives of thousands of innocent people who at this moment live in complete terror from the threat of an imminent U.S.-lead military strike on their homeland.
So here is what you can do to be a part of this powerful final action to stop the march to war in Iraq.
1. Do not forward the letter below. Its power depends upon your sending it directly, as a personal communication to the Pope.
2. Simply cut and paste the letter below into a new email. Also cut and paste the Vatican email address we have provided.
3. At the close of the letter, type in your name, city and state--no need to include your address.
4. Either email, (accreditamenti@pressva.va FAX ([from USA] 011-39-06698-85255 (number fixed and verified 3.18.03) --from other countries drop the 011 prefix -- or send a hard copy of this letter to the addresses in the letter below. DO NOT put "Italy" anywhere on the envelope, as this will send your mail into the Italian mail system which is separate and independent of the Vatican system. Should you wish to phone the Vatican directly, (from USA) dial 011-39-06-69-82--all other countries must use their appropriate international prefix.
5. Pass this original email on to as many people you can so as to assure a critical mass is reached in this action.
6. Note that as you and others begin sending your letters, faxes and emails, there will be a simultaneous effort to alert the media of this action, so as to be sure it is publicly known throughout the world.
Thank you for participating in this formal request of the Pope. We just may stop this war in Iraq -- and save these childrens' lives.
Dr. Helen Caldicott
------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sample letter:
His Holiness John Paul II Apostolic Palace 00120 Vatican City State Europe
"Father, why has thou forsaken me?"
Your Holiness:
I write to you today out of a sense of great urgency. As you know the United States of America is on the verge of launching what may be one of the most cataclysmic wars in history using weapons of mass destruction upon the Iraqi people, fifty percent of whom are less than 15 years of age.
Conservative estimates are that such a war will result in the death of 500,000 Iraqis. It seems clear that, at this time, you are the only person on Earth who can stop this war. Indeed, your physical presence in Baghdad, will prevent the impending slaughter of hundreds of thousands of human beings, and force the international community of nations to identify and implement a truly peaceful resolution to this unprecedented, preemptive aggression.
I implore you to travel to Baghdad and to remain there until a peaceful solution to this crisis has been implemented. The lives of the people of Iraq rest in your hands - as does the fate of the world.
With hope, Your name, Your City, State, Country

I would like to say that I see supporting or troops as not putting them in harms way attacking a country of minimal if any threat to us, a country and people we will 'save' by destroying. Please read this piece by Howard Zinn
When peaceful dissent is dangerous, what is the state of Democracy in America?
Read about poet Sam Hamill of Copper Canyon Press, the fellow who has brought us the incredibly successful website Poets Against the War. People who take the time to think, by definition, are people of conscience, I suppose (Reference Mark Twain quotation below). I've read about citizens in Nazi Germany (My country right or wrong my country) who saw train loads of Jewish folks going into a camp, and seemingly disappear. The camp's smokestack would belch smoke. When asked, they had no idea what happened to the people. They cleaned the messy soot each day from their sidewalks and windowsills and never gave it a thought...
" Not all conservatives are stupid people, but most stupid people are conservatives" - John Stuart Mill
"That which the fascists hate, above all else, is intelligence." - Miguel de Unamudo
If offer you a really clear and quite concise history of Iraq and its US government involvement by Robert Parry of Consortiumnews.com . I have yet to delve into their Archived material , it sure looks interesting.
Does bullying and coercion fit into your view of what America is about and what the UN was created for?
I first learned of Lysistrata from a Todd Rungren song years ago. Today will be marked by the plays performance, 1004 readings in 59 countries.
Fear has always been a tool to lead a populace about, the concentrated media is a super tool.
Are you familiar with the term Psy-Ops? The science of propaganda is well developed. Ask yourself questions about the news you see and hear; read between the lines- what isn't being said?
"The owners and managers of the press determine which person, which facts, which version of the facts, and which ideas shall reach the public."
Report by the Commission on Freedom of the Press, quoted in Democracy for the Few, by Michael Parenti and Don't Blame the People, by Robert Cirino
"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."
— Herman Goering
"We have the greatest opportunity the world has ever seen, as long as we remain honest — which will be as long as we can keep the attention of our people alive. If they once become inattentive to public affairs, you and I, and Congress and Assemblies, judges and governors would all become wolves." - Thomas Jefferson
"Next the statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting the blame upon the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque self-deception." -Mark Twain
"The Central Intelligence Agency owns everyone of any significance in the major media." - William Colby
Media quotations found while looking for the half remembered Goering quote above. The site looks promising but I am not familiar with it.

Mr Bush is against terrorism. Or is he ? When it comes to convicted anti-Cuban terrorist Orlando Bosch, it seems not. Mr Bush actually invited Bosch to sit on the platform he was speaking from as he gave a speech in Miami May 20, 2002. The Bush Family has many connections to Anti-Castro terrorists and the Republican party politicos that support them. In Fact, Jeb Bush has appointed Raoul Cantero, Bosch's lawyer to Florida's Supreme Court. George Bush 1 pardoned the murderous Bosch. And the present Bush named Otto Reich as his assistant secretary of state for Western hemisphere affairs--despite Reich’s longstanding ties to the terrorist. Bush gave Reich a "recess appointment" while Congress was out- meaning that Reich can serve for a year without going through confirmation. A confirmation hearing that explores terrorist ties will be messy.
The actions of the Bush family would give one the idea that they have a different perspective than we 'regular' folks hold on terrorists and terrorism.
Anti-Cuban terrorists are not the only ones that reside in Florida; former Salvadorian generals and convicted torturers Jose Guillermo Garcia and Carlos Eugenio Vides Casonova do as well. They recieved training at the 'US School of the Americas'
An interesting Florida /AntiCastro Cuban Terrorist/ Chavez connection .
