Democracy at home GOP style
Q: Yet the wars go on. It’s almost as if the people don’t matter.
Vidal: The people don’t matter to this gang. They pay no attention. They think in totalitarian terms. They’ve got the troops. They’ve got the army. They’ve got Congress. They’ve got the judiciary. Why should they worry? Let the chattering classes chatter. Bush is a thug. I think there is something really wrong with him. -Gore Vidal (in the Progressive)
Proof:
The House Republican Leadership has announced its intention to have the House vote, before adjourning on Friday or Saturday, on several major pieces of legislation that are not yet available to House members in final form because behind-closed-door negotiations on the proposals are still going on. The Leadership apparently intends to use a process known as “martial law” to allow these bills to be brought to the floor very shortly after negotiations are completed, with the result that Members of the House are likely to have virtually no time to examine and consider the details of the legislation before they will be required to vote on it.
Proof:
WASHINGTON -- President Bush has quietly claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws enacted since he took office, asserting that he has the power to set aside any statute passed by Congress when it conflicts with his interpretation of the Constitution.
Among the laws Bush said he can ignore are military rules and regulations, affirmative-action provisions, requirements that Congress be told about immigration services problems, ''whistle-blower" protections for nuclear regulatory officials, and safeguards against political interference in federally funded research.
Legal scholars say the scope and aggression of Bush's assertions that he can bypass laws represent a concerted effort to expand his power at the expense of Congress, upsetting the balance between the branches of government. The Constitution is clear in assigning to Congress the power to write the laws and to the president a duty ''to take care that the laws be faithfully executed." Bush, however, has repeatedly declared that he does not need to ''execute" a law he believes is unconstitutional.
Any questions?

Tip of the Iceberg
The killing of UN observers in Lebanon by Israeli "Defense" Forces illustrates just how skewed our media is.
Mr Olmert calls the bombing of the UN post a mistake.
BBC offers us a different perspective:
The post was hit by a precision-guided missile after six hours of shelling, diplomats familiar with the probe say.
What do you think?
Jane Lute, the assistant secretary general for peacekeeping, told the UN security council that the base came under close Israeli fire 21 times - including 12 hits within 100 metres and four direct hits - from 1.20pm until contact was lost with the four peacekeepers inside at 7.17pm.
Ms Lute said the peacekeeping force had protested to the Israeli army after each firing incident. The UN's deputy secretary general, Mark Malloch Brown, and Ms Lute herself also made several calls to Israel's mission to the UN "reiterating these protests and calling for an abatement of the shelling", she said.
After contact with the base was lost, Unifil then won safe passage for two armoured personnel carriers to evacuate the position, she said. They arrived at 9.30pm "and found the shelter collapsed and major damage to the rest of the position". Despite negotiating safe passage, the APCs also came under Israeli attack, Ms Lute said.
Obviously we are being lied to. Precision bombing after multiple strikes- and calls to Israeli forces by the soon to be victims.
CNN reports:
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said he was "deeply distressed" by the "apparently deliberate" strike.
"This coordinated artillery and aerial attack on a long-established and clearly marked U.N. post at Khiyam occurred despite personal assurances given to me by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that U.N. positions would be spared Israeli fire," he said in a statement.
"Furthermore, General Alain Pelligrini, the U.N. force commander in south Lebanon, had been in repeated contact with Israeli officers throughout the day on Tuesday, stressing the need to protect that particular U.N. position from attack."
YNet treats us to sham outrage:
Israel's Ambassador to Washington Danny Ayalon said Wednesday that UN Secretary General Kofi Annan should apologize to Israel for saying that dropping a bomb on a UN post in south Lebanon was a deliberate act.
Speaking to CNN Ayalon said Annan's comments are "scandalous," and demanded he apologize.
Just one well documented war crime among literally, tens of thousands.
Lies and death, the Israeli modus operandi continues to manifest.

Further proof that the bombing was NOT accidental:
DUBLIN (Reuters) - An Irish army officer in south Lebanon warned Israel six times that air strikes threatened the lives of U.N. observers there before four staff were killed in a direct hit, Ireland's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
"On six separate occasions he was in contact with the Israelis to warn them that their bombardment was endangering the lives of U.N. staff in South Lebanon," a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said.
"He warned: 'You have to address this problem or lives may be lost'," the spokesman said of comments by Lieutenant Colonel John Molloy, the chief liaison officer between U.N. forces in South Lebanon and the Israelis.
The comments came after Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern summoned Israel's ambassador to a meeting to outline his concerns over the deaths.
Ireland, which until 2001 had a full infantry battalion stationed in Lebanon as part of a U.N. force, currently has 17 soldiers in the region, 10 of whom are in Lebanon.

Smoke and Mirrors

Check out the sidebar; Information Clearing House, Antiwar, CounterPunch and What Really Happened are good generalized news sources. Thoughts On The Eve of the Apocalypse will offer up information on current events that you might have missed. Truth. Commercial media is often innacurate, especially here in the States, on this issue.
But you know that, or you probably wouldn't be here.
Use the sidebar. I'm reading and reasoning- the truth of the matter is obvious. To me.
You be the judge.
