I've read about citizens in Nazi Germany (My country right or wrong my country) who saw train loads of Jewish folks going into a camp, and seemingly disappear. The camp's smokestack would belch smoke. When asked, they had no idea what happened to the people. They cleaned the messy soot each day from their sidewalks and windowsills and never gave it a thought...
