Gordon Parks
"I picked up a camera because it was my choice of weapons against what I hated most about the universe: racism, intolerance, poverty."--Gordon Parks
Gordon Parks has died. Explore some of his work at Legends Online; the video clips offer up some commentary on each photograph. Howard Greenberg Galleries offer 42 of his images from the exhibit "Moments Without Proper Names" Some photographs from his time with the Farm Services Administraion are available at a Library of Congress "Documenting America Photographic Series" which, if you enjoy photography is a must see from start to finish.
Mr Parks directed film, wrote technical books and poetry, composed and played music- a man truly alive.
Parks use of the camera as a tool to fight racism, intolerance and poverty touches me deeply; popular education beyond the spin of words... the image is of what it is, pulling the viewers out of themselves to touch on the world of another. Inspirational.
Mr Parks was 93.
